Review of Stand by Me (1986) by Simon T — 30 Jun 2016
A movie imbued with sadness but entirely unsentimental, in large measure because of director Rob Reiner's great skill with his young cast. A simple narrative - four pre-teenage boys in 1959 Oregon go looking for a dead body - becomes the pretext for personal revelation and self-discovery.
Richard Dreyfuss' narration and Will Wheaton's central performance are sublime. The death of River Phoenix has only added another layer of poignancy to a very fine film.
