Review of Stand by Me (1986) by Penny L — 08 Feb 2012
Coming-of-age stories really get to me. In my top 5 movies of all time 3 of them are considered "coming-of-age." Something about childhood memories and summer and adventure just have a soft spot on my heart.
This movie is no exception. A group of four friends all go out to search for a dead body and there you go, that's the story. But it's so much more than that, these boys are realizing what they are and what they can become which brings this movie even higher on the tomato meter.
I had always wished I'd had friends like these kids, just like me, always searching for some sort of adventure. At the end the main character, Gordie, now all grown up, says that it was funny how they could all be best friends and then reach high school and be strangers to one another.
A melancholy ending to a perfect movie. 5 stars!
