Review of Stand by Me (1986) by Jhon E — 09 Oct 2012
Well this was a great film, and the ending was the icing on the cake. Stand By Me was a very enjoyable film, as well as a great film. My father suggested this film to me, as he watched it when he was young and said it was one of his favourites, so I watched it. I loved it, the story was fantastic, I like most of Stephen King's work, and I have read a few novels of his, but not this one yet. The film is based upon Stephen King's The Body. The film follows four children in a small country town called Castle Rock during September of 1959. The children embark on a journey to find a dead body, which is a long journey. The journey becomes more of a self-discovery for the four boys, and how the boys deal with the challenges ahead of them. An older Gordy, the protagonist of the film, narrates the story as he writes a memoir.
The film takes a big risk. The film has a potentially corny plot, but it was done very tastefully, and is not corny. The film also has a limited acting group; it is concentrated on four actors who are children. If you know me I usually loathe child actors, but these children act superbly and make individual, believable characters. I was impressed with the acting, as well as other cameos of the film. The plot, or story is very deep and this is obviously, because it is based on a book, but it still needs to be commended. The film also has a few flashbacks, which are usually risky. The flashbacks work, but I thought Gordy's story was very humorous, and somehow works in the serious film.
The film characters are played well, the fat child, the troublesome child, and the weird loony child, and of course the nerdy child. The characters are distinctive and make a good film, as well as their stories and hardships. The cameos, which comprises mainly of Kiefer Sutherland and his idiot droogs causing trouble, are also played well. Kiefer plays the antagonist, or bad guy teenager everyone hates.
Overall, I loved this film, and I really enjoyed this film. It was a realistic look at pre-pubescent life of the males on an adventure. It hits an emotion cord for some and is a great tale. I would recommend this to many people, and even the action junkies might enjoy this film.
