Review of Stalag 17 (1953) by Nicole N — 22 Jan 2008
This movie is to POW movies what Das Boot is to submarine movies. It is gritty, dark, and flawless in every aspect of production. It has one of the most compelling stories ever caught on film. William Holden does a great job as Sefton, never making you completely hate him yet never letting you like him either.
Robert Strauss and Harvey Lembeck do excellent jobs as the comic relief, and all of the other actors give engaging performances as well. Billy Wilder manages to keep you guessing until the end as to who the villain is.
I can't recommend this movie highly enough.
