Review of Stalag 17 (1953) by Laura N — 22 Aug 2009
Excellent Billy Wilder film that takes place inside Stalag 17, a german p.o.w. camp. It's focus is one barracks full of american sergeants and the film is a mix of humor, suspicion, and ultimately bravery.
The film stars William Holden as Sefton, he is always scheming his fellow prisoners out of cigarettes to trade for other necessities and is viewed within the barracks as a snitch. Holden won an oscar for his performance and provides a real strong character here that anchors the rest of the film that is fairly lighthearted.
Though some of it's humor is extremely dated, the film provides a compelling look inside a prison camp and the day to day struggles endured by it's occupants.
