Review of Stalag 17 (1953) by Dan N — 10 Nov 2009
Yet more film gold from Billy Wilder. The inmates of Stalag 17 are always thinking up new ways to escape their prison and get one over on their guards. Unfortunately for them they have a traitor in their midst who keeps ratting out their plans to the guards.
The balance between dark humour and drama is perfectly judged, never portraying life in prison camp as anything other than horrible. It features an outstanding performance from William Holden as cynical inmate Sefton who always seems to be cutting deals with the guards... The mystery of who the traitor is really well done and will keep you guessing until the end.
Just an absolutely superb film. Go watch it.
