Review of Stake Land (2010) by Aidan H — 07 Sep 2011
Episodic drama in which lost boy Paolo and his zombie-killing mentor battle their way to Canada via a population-light US wastelands. Although SL's script is stripped to the bone and its setting and tone appropriately bleak, a TV-movie ambience pervades throughout the proceedings, much to its detriment.
The performances from its relatively unknown cast are workmanlike (especially Damici as the hard-bitten Mister) but more time could have been spent explaining where the plucky survivors acquired all their designer clobber and why cigarettes, booze and gasoline appear to be in plentiful supply.
Minor quibbles aside, the producers of this film have managed to make a decent enough movie from limited finances and, while it holds little in the way of thrills, it still beats shite like The Walking Dead hands-down.
Not your average zombie movie but worth a watch for some gory moments.
