Review of Stake Land (2010) by Matt F — 24 Oct 2011
Certainly not the action film I was expecting, Stake Land struggles slightly for an identity leaving it somewhere between the post apocalyptic bleakness of The Road and the anti-organised religion overtones of The Book Of Eli.
Beautiful imagery contrasts against brutal action sequences in the same way that Martin's (Connor Paulo) humanisation of the horrors he witnesses counters Mister's (Nick Damici) brooding, reluctant "hero".
Dealing with sacrifice, loss and reliance on each other in the face of adversity, it puts a serious face on the recent fashionability of vampire themed movies / TV shows. Although it doesn't break into my top vampire movies list (Let The Right One In, 30 Days Of Night, Blade and The Lost Boys), Canada seems like a great place for New Eden.
