Review of Stake Land (2010) by Richard C — 16 Sep 2012
This surprisingly strong horror vampire zombie hybrid film blew me away for the most part. Jim Mickie takes an interesting approach to the material one I would not have expected. Void of any humor or Hollywood niceties Stake Land is a brutal, horrifying horror film that explores the evils of the human soul.
Filled with strong performances from Connor Paolo, Danielle Harris and Kelly McGillis the film follows a young man and his story trying to survive this horrifying post apocalyptic world. It's filled with the people he meets and their outcomes and the connections he makes.
I was surprised to find myself on the verge of tears for the most of the films running time it's not an easy film to get through. With a neat, western vibe throughout and a realism rarely brought to genre films and solid production values I'm surprised this film wasn't more of a breakout hit.
Hopefully on DVD it will find a bigger audience so we can see a sequel.
