Review of Stake Land (2010) by Jessica P — 12 Dec 2012
I definitely enjoyed this film but there is something TV movie that would've then transitioned into a weekly TV series. I don't really mean that in a derogatory manner, but it feels like the first episode of a much larger story.
But I did enjoy the film, even though there's still some gore here and there, the film focuses on the characters or at least the world these characters inhabit and how they react to this epidemic that has destroyed not only the United States but the entire world.
So I liked that the film focused on how the characters react to this. The problem is that the characters themselves really don't do much to me, at least as far as the main cast goes. I don't think they're properly developed, they're one dimensional.
The only character that really stands out is Mister and Nick Damici does a fine job in his role. It's the typical 'pretend to be a hard-ass but he's actually a sweet guy' gimmick, but Nick does a fine job and his character is definitely the best.
May have something to do with the fact that he co-wrote the script...The film does have a good sense of atmosphere and that's another stand-out aspect of the film. Despite having a $4 million budget, the film doesn't look or feel like it.
, they definitely get a lot out of it. That's about it really, the characters themselves don't really do much for me but the atmosphere and the way the film portrays this world more than makes up for it.
Solid film.
