Review of Stake Land (2010) by Ilsa W — 15 Dec 2012
The plot revolves around an orphaned young man named Martin (Connor Paolo) being taken under the wing of a vampire hunter known as "Mister"(NIck Damici) and the battle for survival in their quest for a safe haven in post-apocaliptic America where vicious zombies/vampires are running loose.
Along the way they run across a nun (Kelly McGillis) being raped by two men belonging to a religious sect named The Brethren that is a fundamentalist militia headed by Jebedia Loven (Michael Cerveris) that interprets the plague as the Lord's work.
I noticed plenty of critics loved this film but I don't share the love folks. It is so depressing and hopeless. I do agree with Chicago Reader critic Ben Sachs when he said that "Mickle's observation of a devastated working-class America is so sharp that the horror elements, though effectively handled, come to feel like an afterthought.
" That is a very accurate statement of this film. It is available on Netflix instant streaming in HD.
