Review of Stake Land (2010) by Chris M — 06 Apr 2016
A low-budget, (almost) arthouse horror film, that sort-of mashes up the zombie and vampire genres. It owes a lot to The Road, with the central pairing of Martin and Mister trying to survive this apocalyptic world where the vampires are the least of their worries.
It's often slow-paced, but in a very good way. It's quietly brooding, with a near constant feeling of threat and dread. Michael Cerveris is terrifying as the head of a cult who seem utterly amoral and willing to stop at nothing to exert control. This is truly the end of civilisation. And it's not afraid to introduce characters you want to root for, that you hope will make it out OK, and then, they don't. Recommended.
