Review of Stagecoach (1939) by Alex V — 14 Sep 2008
This is the movie that not only launched John Wayne as a star(rightfully so), but it also truly redefined the western genre. It isn't a genre film really. It builds up the charcters not the action.
It gives us characters to care about despite their flaws and puts them in a story which intrigues us. This is easily one of the best in it's genre. It benefits greatly from John Ford who is one of the great directors.
The camerawork is also pretty groundbreaking and influenced many filmmakers including Orson Welles. This, like the Searchers, is so much more than a western and anyone who skips this because it's a western is doing themselves a great disservice.
