Review of Stagecoach (1939) by Kendra C — 10 Nov 2007
A study in classic filmmaking. Director John Ford goes to Monument Valley to use his famous scenery. I saw this after The Searchers, and I must say that MV looks just as good in black and white. John Wayne as the Ringo Kid is, perhaps, the most romantic character in film.
My goodness, is he dashing. The understated love story here was a pleasant surprise. Wayne is a dashing hero, but Claire Trevor, his romantic interest, is in no way weak or dependent. Great stuff. The film does begin a little slow, but once they all get on the stagecoach, things pick up and don't stop till the end.
And that Southern gentleman on board with them...don't know why, but I find him slimy and untrustworthy.
