Review of Stagecoach (1939) by Adam Z — 27 Feb 2009
Great movie. One of Ford's best. The movie that started the "revisionist Western" era long before Zinnemann, Peckinpah or Leone came around. In just one hundred minutes, it's able to juggle about five or six substantial characters and make all of them seem curiously three-dimensional.
John Wayne and John Carradine both shine in their starmaking roles, but I would argue that Thomas Mitchell's performance, as the alcoholic doctor, is the heart of the movie.
