Review of Stagecoach (1939) by Nicholas F — 10 Mar 2010
Wow. Great film by John Ford and I can't wait to see the Criterion edition that will be released later this year. The acting was superb, even from John Wayne. No wonder this role made him a star. Great story.
The only problem with the film was that I got to watch a bad version. In the picture, you could actually see scratches that were on the negative rolling throughout. However, this DVD is probably the first time "Stagecoach" was transferred to DVD and was done terribly and cheap. The film will be released as part of the Criterion Collection later this year and I would hope to see the remaster and retouch work they do clean up the negative and make the picture better. Because this is the film that made Ford a household name (in that era), he clearly didn't have a big budget and the film and some of the early transitions of the film reflect this.
