Review of Stage Fright (2014) by Eric C — 03 Nov 2014
After her opera singer mother is brutally murdered a girl cannot resist the limelight at a musical theater summer camp. This summer's production is a Kabuki version of The Haunting of the Opera, but suspiciously campers are being slaughtered one-by-one.
Hilariously campy and enjoyably dark, this is basically Glee meets Friday The 13th. The entire thing is very tongue in cheek and honors both genres. The production value is solid, and as gruesome as it gets, it never seems to take itself too seriously. Plenty of theater in-jokes & breaking of the 4th wall. Meat Loaf has a lot of fun as the camp director with a dark side. The opening number includes a bus-load of teens singing the lyrics "We're gay, we're gay, in all kinds of ways!" so after that you know what kind of movie you're into. The final musical production is a hoot. If you like the phrase "Summer Camp Slasher Musical" this is for you.
