Review of Stage Door (1937) by Bob W — 29 Aug 2008
Very captivating! I defy you to lose interest in these characters. The constant banter and sarcastic crisp one liners are absolutely brilliant, as is Hepburn's mastery even in an early role. It's amazing to see so many actresses we got to know at an obviously much older age so full of potential and vivacious here (especially Lucille Ball and Ginger Rogers and I don't think I've ever seen Eve Arden this way!) I especially liked the stage play sort of ending which produced a nostalgiac moment of melancholy for me, not only for the characters in the story like the sadness you have at the end of reading a great novel, but also considering these wonderful actresses here in this film so young with so much ahead of them and now in the real world nearly all of them long gone.
..but never forgotten!
