Review of Stage Beauty (2004) by Chrissy A — 25 Jun 2008
Not sure about the clashes of the acting styles and especially the ending seemed far too modern to me. overall it is way too close to be a "shakespeare in love" rip off taking the at times ridiculous route (I don't have a problem with a male actor running around in a woman's dress, but there were some scenes clearly played like a farce, e.
G. the scene in bed with the king, which simply didn't feel quite right to me). I'm doing quite a bit of early modern studies and ironically have to write an exam on luce irigaray in the very near future, so issues of cross-dressing, what a woman is (although irigaray rejects this question) and reality vs.
illusion do interest me a lot, but they can't quite keep my attention over the whole course of this film.
