Review of Stage Beauty (2004) by Steve S — 24 Oct 2007
*** (out of four).
It's 1660 and the theater world is alove and well in Great Britain, especially for Ned, played by Billy Crudup. He is one of the most celebrated stage actors of his time. He shines, most notably, in women's parts. At this time women were not allowed to play any role at all. King George II is tired of seeing the same ol' actors in the same ol' roles so he declares that from now on women would play the women's parts. This sends Ned on a downward spiral, professionally and emotionally.
Nice period detail and fine performanes from Crudup as well as Claire Danes and Ben Chaplin. Not everything fits together perfectly, but it is, for the most part, a well told story.
