Review of St. Elmo's Fire (1985) by Aaron T — 05 Jan 2009
Talk about overrated! There was no problem with the directing, Joel Schumacher is a very good director. The problem is the script. The characters just kind of fumble through their lines, they love each other, they get mad at each other, but never really having any real sense of motivation. There was nothing that could save the film once one character tried to rape one of his friends and she just forgets about it. I got absolutely nothing out of this film except my time wasted. I'm pretty sure this only became a classic because it was the first movie to feature the Brat Pack post-Breakfast Club, so it just seemed like one good turn deserved another. I don't know. That's flimsy logic, I realize, but I can't wrap my head around a whole generation of at least somewhat adequately educated people all saying that this film will stand the test of time. Maybe their standards were just a lot lower back then. Who knows?
So if you didn't catch it by now: this movie is rubbish. Don't waste your time on it.
