Review of Spy Game (2001) by John M — 31 Mar 2009
A highly entertaining espionage thriller. I didn't really have any expectations before watching it, other than it being a Tony Scott movie, so I was looking forward to some style. Well, I got that and lots more.
As you may be able to guess, this is a movie about spies. You have here a CIA agent Nathan Muir (Robert Redford) who is one day away from retiring. On this same day, his former colleague Tom Bishop (Brad Pitt) is captured on a rescue mission in a Chinese prison.
Muir must play cat-and-mouse with other agents to figure out some solution before Bishop gets executed in 24 hours. This type of movie sometimes has the tendency to fall apart at the end, which is why I am happy to say that it holds up throughout.
It's a smart movie, but it never asks more from it's audience then just it's attention. I do have a couple of complaints; one being that Brad Pitt, even when beat-up still looks way too pretty and starry-eyed for this type of role.
My other complaint is the name of the movie itself; it sounds bland and uninteresting, which Spy Game most certainly is not.
