Review of Spread (2009) by Jacob M — 07 Jan 2010
Spread strives to be a refreshing dark comedy that tackles the subject of heartache, among others, and the results are mixed. The acting is passable (though in some emotional scenes they act like 50 cent from Get Rich or Die Tryin'), and the movie has its moments, but it hits more than it misses and utterly disappoints.
Plus, it doesn't rally accomplish what it set out to do in the first place. Instead of deconstructing life in LA, it celebrates it, by making every bit of the life so appealing that you find it hard to believe that it would be so heartbreaking or sad.
This is a failed attempt to get Ashton Kutcher into the limelight of critical praise, but at least he's trying, as this is the best movie he's made so far. Who knows, maybe one day he'll make a movie that's truly entertaining to watch (a live-action movie).
