Review of Spotlight (2015) by Josi Victoria L — 09 Mar 2016
I just finished watching Spotlight and I am shaking. I am not exactly sure why, I'm overwhelmed on so many levels - I am angry, I am sad, I am terrified, I am in awe of the art of storytelling in this movie, I am full of admiration for the morality that finally came through to reveal these crimes, and I am embarrassed by the evil that exists in this world perpetrated by selfish heinous humans against our most vulnerable. This movie is one of those movies that will never leave you, it gets in your psyche and colours the world differently - good and bad.
Mark Ruffalo is fast becoming my favorite actor; he delivers this role with such depth that you barely notice his at-first obvious blatant lack of social skills as the movie progresses. You start to see a deeper struggle, possibly a long hidden secret, you are transfixed by him, he tears your heart out when he finally explodes. Yet it's all subtle and brilliant.
It's a difficult movie to watch, not because of vulgar scenes of gross indecencies portrayed but because our mind goes there, whether you want to or not, it plays out in the worst ways in your head. It shows the ugliness without showing one gratuitous act of deprivation. See it, please, and maybe we can all learn to be more accountable to hard truths.
