Review of Spotlight (2015) by Richard S — 25 May 2016
A brilliant film following the investigative journalism carried out by the Boston Globe's spotlight team to uncover a cover-up by the Catholic Church. Most films of this nature can go one of 2 ways, they either present us with scenes of tremendous heart break to pull at the heart strings of the audience or it can be a very dry, slow paced investigative feature full of cliches (usually at some point the lead investigator would be fired for their maverick actions and then save the day in their own time).
Luckily this is neither, the film treats it's audience with respect and intelligence. The writing and the performances pull you into the investigation and keeps you hooked at every turn and setback as this small group of journalists fight to reveal the truth.
The cast is spot on and no actor hogs the limelight, each performance compliments the others in the film. Well worth seeing.
