Review of Spotlight (2015) by Brent_Marchant — 22 Nov 2015
A generally effective though sometimes plodding chronicle of how Spotlight, the Boston Globe's investigative reporting unit, exposed the Catholic Church's coordinated coverup of the child abuse activities of priests around the world.
After a painfully slow opening 30 minutes, the film takes off, working best when the Spotlight reporters are out in the field, interviewing sources and uncovering leads. The picture's capable ensemble delivers with earnest, committed sincerity, despite a dearth of meaningful character development.
Because of its powerful message, this is bound to be a strong awards season contender for sure.
