Review of Spotlight (2015) by Steviegjd — 09 Nov 2015
Normally, the most one can hope for from a movie is that it is well made, entertaining and not stupid. I realize that's a low bar. But there are many stupid movies too. Spotlight is an intelligent, thoughtful and important movie.
The cast is great. Mark Ruffalo, who I usually do not like, was more of a distinct character than he has ever been in a film. There is tension and a great payoff. The only movie I have ever seen like this is All the President's Men.
Granted, that had the whole government aspect, but the Catholic Church, especially in Boston, is a quasi government. Spotlight makes one sad that real investigative journalism is on the decline in this country, due to all of the corporate mergers of newspapers and their goals.
But it highlights an important and unique role the media can, and truly should, play in our society.
