Review of Spotlight (2015) by Will W — 15 Jun 2016
Serious and harrowing, Spotlight is a film where you could be forgiven for thinking not a lot is happening, and yet just like the material it covers, you scratch the surface and you find something a lot deeper. Voted best picture of the last year, it's an essential watch, a very brave piece of film making, and perhaps the best performance I've seen from Mark Ruffalo.
The thing that sticks with me even now, as I write while the credits roll is the final shot of the movie, no not of Michael Keaton, but the list. Watch Spotlight and you will see just what I mean.
Spotlight is controversial, brave and thought provoking. While it may not be my favourite film of 2015, I can see why it won best picture, it is pushing boundaries and showing things most others wouldn't touch. Surely just like reporting, that is what cinema is all about.
