Review of Spotlight (2015) by Wes L — 08 Apr 2016
There is nothing elegant about this film as it peels back layer after layer of nauseating facts. It's not cinematically beautiful. It doesn't make you fall in love with the characters. However, its cool methodical approach provides snapshots to the emotional journey of the investigative reporters, the families, and most importantly the victims of abuse.
Thankfully it does not sensationalize the grotesque acts of physical and psychological abuse perpetrated and covered up by a trusted institution. Instead, it calmly peels back each layer for us to clearly understand what can happen when blind institutional faith takes priority over basic human decency.
