Review of Split (2017) by Larry H — 30 Jul 2017
Accentuating the film is some breathtakingly eerie cinematography by Mike Gioulakis, most known for his work on It Follows . The majority of the film takes place in a single location which allows the director of photography to go all-out with how each shot is framed.
A lot of shots have a slow-moving forward pan that adds a creep factor to the most mundane of moments. As the story focuses on empathy for those who suffer with mental illnesses I found that the cinematography almost replicates that in physical form on display.
There is a claustrophobic yet tender feel to the film which is hard to shake away.
