Review of Split (2017) by Nell A — 21 Jun 2017
It's not a "bad" movie. I just really did not enjoy it. James McAvoy delivers a fantastic performance, but that isn't enough for me. This type of fiction may be a fun way of flirting with darkness for some.
But as the sister of two gravely mentally ill people (and I am aware multiple personality disorder is not an acknowledged, proven condition) a lot of this was just gruelling to watch, not in a fun way.
The movie relies on obviously false suspense (i.e. we all know nothing is going to happen in the first hour) and the ending is just flat out frustrating. It all drags out, too. I also firmly disagree with the "horror" tag this movie seems to get.
It's an out of the box thriller.
