Review of Splendor in the Grass (1961) by Lisa T — 21 Feb 2008
Completely heartbreaking and not a little depressing... however this film is so expertly crafted, sumptuous, glorious and with compelling performances that I can't help but love it. I just saw it for the first time since I wrote an essay on it about 13 years ago.
And it was just as inspiring. I wrote about the family home as a monster comparable to a horror monster. And god, but you hate the control parents can have over the lives of their offspring. Really want to throw Gibran's 'on children' at them.
Possibly Natalie Wood's finest performance and she somehow manages not to quite chew the scenary.
