Review of Splash (1984) by Jack C — 29 Dec 2008
To look at Ron Howard's latest film, the political drama "Frost/Nixon", and then compare it to his first big hit, "Splash", one can see quite a difference. The Howard today is an accomplished filmmaker with Oscar-winning films in his ever-expanding cannon.
The Howard of 1984 was a more whimsical fellow in my opinion. He was fantastical and boyish in his storytelling, and this led to some wonderful wonderful films. "Splash" is one of those films.
A simple tale of a businessman unlucky in love (the unbelievably likable Hanks) falling for a beautiful mermaid (the great Daryl Hannah). It's a joy of a film and it just works. Through the performances we actually believe this is a mermaid and we do actually believe that they fall in love.
As they swim off into the sunset in the end you feel completely satisfied in the story. As for the support it's stellar, with classic comedy counterparts Candy and Levy, they add a manic comedic streak that land some big belly laughs.
All in all then this aquatic romance is definitely not a drop in the ocean, it's a tidal wave of fun.
