Review of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) by Chungus M — 05 Jan 2019
"Spider-Man into the Spider-Verse" has set the bar high. With originality that breaks free from the all-to-familiar mundane plot lines, long time fans itching for the portrayal of Miles on the big screen will not be disappointed.
The humor captures the lovable wit of our favorite Spider-Men while also incorporating the heavier themes straight from the comics. You will watch as the heroes and heroines flip and swing through the city, but you will also see, firsthand, their characters develop, a critical part of storytelling that is often washed over in movies these days. This movie tackles loss, identity, betrayal, family, trust, and self-worth. And yes, there is also kick-butt action.
The brilliant writing, refreshing narrative, and gripping soundtrack make it more than a mere superhero film. In terms of visuals alone the movie is worth seeing. The animation remarkably depicts a comic-like feel, with sliding panels and thought bubbles creating an immersive experience. Morales soars to heights unseen in live action films.
Everyone will leave the theater pleased. Wether it's the characters, writing, animation, soundtrack, or plot, there is an aspect of this movie to appeal for all. Adults will love the action, kids will love their superheroes, teenagers will witness their coming-of-age struggles in Miles, and Spider-Man fans will, of course, watch favorite characters fight the epic King Pin. Sweet homages throughout, a cameo from Stan Lee, and a tribute to him in the end will leave all crying and laughing. Team Maguire, team Garfield, and team Holland can reunite over their love for Spider-Verse.
This movie brings the Spider-Verse to life. I highly encourage everyone to give it a chance.
And remember to stay to the very end ;).
