Review of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) by Ian J — 19 Dec 2018
Powerful and fresh. Having not read the Miles story arc from the books was a good thing as this film catches you up quick. The story is savvy to the main character. The plot is handled with respect, and the Stan Lee cameos keep getting better.
I can understand from an artist's perspective the choices made or inspired by. The render look is inspired by Telltale Games design choices for their Walking Dead and Batman games. You could even go so far as to say the Borderlands games.
The stuttering animation is what animation does best. Less frames equals shorter render times equals more attention to other things. I really enjoyed the dot gain textures / materials used to light the character during key moments too.
Natural without being overwhelming. The main character and his world feel genuinely real. His relationships make you smile, and the plot twists as fast as Spidey can spin on a web. Good comedic timing also leverage between heavy action sequences- a staple from the best Spidey writers.
Marvel has once thought the idea of a multi-verse was poor writing and was a staple calling card from what kept them different then DC. (Keeping an eye on continuity which hasn't been easy.) Now they're playing the alternate dimensions in spades and it has given their franchise character new life.
This is the film that has born an infinite business for Marvel. Now only if they can just keep us all alive long enough to enjoy them all, that's the real trick.
