Review of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) by Caleb R — 22 Dec 2018
Okay, this year I thought I'd seen it all when it came to good superhero movies. Black Panther, Infinity Wars, and The Incredibles 2. I remember that most of those had trailers for this movie, and I shrugged and though "Looked cool, but that's probably just cause they wanted a cool trailer". Turns out, this movie lives up to the hype, 100 percent. It is, hands down, my favorite superhero movie of this year. First, the animation is... lush, textured, colorful, striking,, electric, fluid, and a bunch of other synonyms that escape me now. Just... Wow. It's like the brilliance of the final battle of the Incredibles 2 was distilled and liberally mixed through the whole movie. Second, the story is wonderful, taking an absurd multiverse story and running with it. There were so many ways for this to get muddled, confused, unfocused, but it never did. The characters are perfectly matched with their animations, and I swear that the spider-man voiced Nickolas Cage even had his mannerisms! The heroes are wonderfully individual, the villains were both threatening and had solid motives, and the side characters are on point as well. Lastly, the writing is excellently paced and well marbled with humor.
All in all, I can't think of a movie I've enjoyed more recently, and I highly recommend you go see it.
