Review of Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) by Brendan N — 24 Nov 2017

This reboot takes the idea and creates a film that no one expected. The Amazing Spiderman was a complete waste of time and sunk the film into one giantic mess, the only way out was a clear and different direction. The film has a strong direction but it's not a film to define the genre, the creative teams really needed to improve the genre or at least attempt something challenging. I just got the sense it's a normal marvel production that is great to watch at the cinemas but grows tiresome at home. Keaton brings a strong villain performance but like all the other marvel films, he doesn't grow too much and is sidelined repeatedly. I think seeing the high reviews left me wanting more, even though this film delivers on the action front it lacks the distinct tone DC has established. I think marvel lack the edge and while they have the box office, they don't have the advantage of allowing filmmakers creative freedom. I really wanted to love this but I still find Sam Raimis trilogy a pleasure to watch and the definitive Spiderman. I think the filmmakers can give us something creative and interesting for the sequel and avoid the pitfalls of attempting a very safe film. 08-07-2017.

The film is funny and oozes with marvel cinematic influence. I still consider the Raimi series the better one only because he is a visionary stylist, this director is not. Marvel has only started branching out with director choices after the complaint of them being popcorn films. I won't buy marvel but I will watch them at the cinema as that's the format they aim for. The comics generally have more character which DC do well on film but marvel struggle with keeping films worthy of a rewatch after because of by the numbers filmmaking. 23-11-2017.
