Review of Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) by Ulysses K — 20 May 2018
This movie fails to encapture the true character of Spider-Man and instead decides to make him a bumbling child, rather than a witty young genius. Both Civil War and Infinity War have mastered how to go about with this character, but here in his own film, he fails to at least be sensible or anything like previous Spider-Men.
Also along for a poor quality ride, are the other characters on his side - Ned, who quickly becomes an annoyance once learning the identity of Spider-Man and hopes to plunge Peter Parker into more trouble by trying to link their (Spider-Man and Peter) identities as one, Liz Allen who is somehow related to the films villain (The Vulture) as his daughter, and the skater-like Michelle who is pathetically revealed to be playing a different interpretation of Mary Jane who isn't even named Mary Jane.
The only true quality of the film lies with the villains - The Vulture played by Michael Keaton who crafts all the reason to root for the bad guys, The Tinkerer and Shocker who have loads of fun quips and Donald Glover's carefree gangster and hilariously enjoyable Aaron Davis.
