Review of Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) by Timw001 — 08 Jul 2017
Spider-Man Homecoming has good moments surrounded by an average movie. Peter Parker never has any struggles to overcome and therefore he has no character development. Yes, he literally lifted some rubble off his head which was the strongest part of this movie. The main issue to overcome was Tony Stark taking away his suit, but Peter learned nothing from this and did not act any different; there was no change to his character.
The villain also was pretty terrible. If Spider-Man stopped pursuing the villain he would have been left alone. The villain did not care about Spider-Man except Spider-Man kept forcing himself to be in the way. The villain could have been replaced by basically any gangster and it would have been the same movie.
On that note, Spider-Man could have been replaced by any hero and would have had the exact same movie. It was more of a Marvel movie than it was a Spider-Man movie. The entire movie and especially the climax had extremely muted colours, no memorable music except for the opening which used the cartoon theme. The climax did not have Spider-Man defeat the villain but instead the villain more so defeated himself.
Spider-Man reluctantly accepts his power and fights a villain because he has to. He uses his powers at first in a greedy way because he needs the money (Wrestling, taking photos of himself to sell) because he has to take care of Aunt May. But in Homecoming life is pretty easy for him.
But it did have redeeming qualities; it was funny, the opening sequence where he was trying to be a friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man, the supporting cast, the actor Tom Holland was also great.
