I'm a big fan of Spiderman and I would like the film makers to commit to the character and his story arcs for a decent run of movies. Sam Raimi did a decent job until he came to number 3 but that's no reason to give up, I had high hopes for his plans for a 4th movie but they fizzled out after the failure of 3. The Amazing Spiderman went a little darker which I enjoyed and it had 2 great leads who had fantastic chemistry. The sequel had a few missteps but they handled the Gwen Stacey storyline perfectly which could have lead to a very different sequel, plus there was the potential there to expand the universe with Sinister Six and Venom movies which were eventually scrapped :o( .

Now we have a 3rd version of Spiderman that has so far taken a much lighter tone to the character. I enjoyed the character's appearance in Civil War, it was one of the highlights of the movie but his first solo outing despite being enjoyable was missing something. It's the first movie so I will give it a chance.

They don't cover origins again which is a smart move because there are only so many Uncle Bens we can see die on screen before we get tired but we're still in the early days of Spiderman so the character is still finding his feet, this Spiderman is naive and inexperienced. The most annoying thing I found in this version was Iron Man's intervention. I don't want another spin-off Avengers movie, I want a stand alone Spiderman movie and so Spiderman's new high tech Iron Man-esqu suit was a bit of a bore, as was Iron Man's new role as babysitter.

I felt Michael Keaten made a decent bad guy in the form of Vulture, and without revealing spoilers, there is one scene in particular where his character warns Spiderman to stay away which was spot on and very sinister. The characters who surround Spiderman were all very forgettable. His friends were poorly written characters, the 'love interest' just wasn't there and the casting of Flash Thompson who may or may not eventually become a big bad seemed to be way off the mark. Despite all of the negatives, it is an enjoyable movie, it's just not one of the more memorable efforts from Marvel.
