Review of Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) by Scott G — 20 Jul 2017
Spiderman Homecoming 4/5 Stars.
Homecoming, indeed. Everything you were excited to see, and most of what you hoped to see come to life in this big screen incarnation of our friendly neighborhood webslinger.
They did just about everything they could to make this different from the other Spiderman movie series'. The cast is very diverse and it feels natural. Peter Parker has all the emotional weakness and inexperience that a 15 year old should have. It plays well. Tom Holland is outstanding.
This movie surprised me in several places too, pleasantly. So i'm just not going to get into any spoilery details- it's energetic and fun and humorous and deeper on many levels than this source material earns. So many little golden moments and all the supporting cast, even the bit parts really nail their 10 seconds on screen. Some of the teachers are the unsung heroes of this cast.
The few criticisms I have with Homecoming are that it feels like a piece of a bigger puzzle. There are many tie-ins to the other MCU movies and if you haven't seen those, some of the good stuff might slip by you. A couple of the action sequences take place in the dark and are edited as if they occur in well lit situations so that its hard to follow.
That's it though, I would say more but look, just go out and see this if you're a fan. I want to see it again soon and think it will have a higher than normal level of rewatchability. PG-13. Family safe more or less but probably targeted to a more mature teen or pre teen audience than the early 2000s spiderman films.
