Review of Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) by Alex A — 09 Jul 2017
Jon Watts's Spider-Man: Homecoming is an enjoyable, lighthearted coming-of-age story with excellent performances, making it a superior entry in the MCU. Homecoming's best moments come from its character interactions.
Tom Holland steals the show as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and proves that he is the best actor to be cast in the role. The supporting cast namely, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds and Michael Keaton as the Vulture, are also great additions.
The film is at its best when it focuses on Parker's high-school career, his relationships with friends and his aunt, and overall life in Queens. In fact, Homecoming's unique focus on teen and school-life is what sets it apart from other MCU films and, somehow, other Spider-Man films as well.
While the action is underwhelming by Marvel standards, those previously mentioned scenes more than compensate. Homecoming's third act and main plot-beats does fall into the too-familiar MCU formula, but the first two-thirds of the film are vastly different, delivering a refreshing entry into the universe.
