Review of Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) by Mikhail O — 10 Jul 2017

If there's a movie where Marvel Studios tried a different formula in terms of storytelling, Spider-Man: Homecoming was the movie that made it to that fresh idea. Because unlike the typical introductory MCU films, it focused on the growth and character development of Peter Parker both as a high school genius and a hero after the Civil War event instead of having an origin story revisiting his past on how he got his superpowers.

The idea of this movie was to bring out the full potential of Peter Parker as Spider-Man proving that he's worth of being the hero every people need. The fully upgraded suit that Tony Stark gave him made a turning point in his life where his struggles in using the technology made him a reckless person instead of using it effectively. At this very point, the character grows on the heart of the audience because it reflects what an individual experience on his/her teenage years, making us appreciate the entire context of Peter's personality as a hero and a teenager. Tom Holland's performance in the film was exceptional and balanced the whole idea of Spidey's character with the great sense of humor, charisma, and unique influence from other previous actors who played the same role. One of the incredible performances that really stole the entire show was Michael Keaton's portrayal of The Vulture. He really made the villain more menacing than it was from the comic books. The climax revealing a great plot twist in that car scene where Adrian Toomes was talking to Peter really did the greatest performance in the movie. We witnessed such superb acting talent by Keaton who executed well the whole idea on how a villain should be and what motivates him the most to do the worse things for living. The antagonist displayed a huge motivation for him to do the villain's job for his family and he's not to be underestimated which makes him more intimidating. The additional character performances of Laura Harrier, Zendaya, Tony Revolori, and Jacob Batalon really did a great job taking us back to the old high school days where every teenage culture and influence exists within the school campus.

The script-writing in the entire movie was great and completely described much of the high school life and the struggles of a teenage Peter Parker as he steps up to become a maturing person and a responsible individual for all his actions as our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. The continuing influence of his fellow Avengers on his career as a hero now makes him play a big and important part in the MCU.
