I think some people missed the humor of the movie. It's Sam Raimi and he's freaking goofy (see: Army of Darkness, Drag Me to Hell). I think it fits because, let's be honest, Spider-Man is a bit of a goofy character.
That being said, I agree with the criticism that it has too many villains.
