Review of Spider-Man 2 (2004) by Gabe C — 21 Oct 2013
Incredibly human plot especially for a super hero movie. Only movie out there about a guy who swings through NYC on webs and a guy with huge metal arms that's completely realistic and even emotional. Truly unique, artistically made. Wow, I'm surprised that after 9 years it still holds up in my book. The genius of this movie is that it has a human subplot that ends up feeding into the main conflict. This subplot becomes a lesson for Peter to learn, and that lesson ends up being what gives the truly tragically written villain his redemption. And then it turns out that the subplot was really an expansion on the subplot of the last film: the theme of responsibility. It's a truly perfectly written and perfectly directed work of art that just happens to be about a superhero. It balances humor, with drama, with action, and with romance that becomes a truly epic movie not only in style and scale, but in drama and emotion. Not only that but it's extremely entertaining and engaging. You will end up investing in these characters like you couldn't in the first installment. You'll cry hen they cry, and cheer when they cheer. The beautiful score compliments the film. Every time I watch this I get choked up about how good it is. I'm serious. If there really were a guy who could shoot webs and a guy with mechanical arms somewhere in the world, you'd think this was based on a true story. It's that raw and rich.
9.8 out of 10.
One of my three favorite superhero movie along with DKR and superman returns. One of my favorite movies period.
