Review of Spider-Man 2 (2004) by Paul W — 04 Oct 2014
Spider-man 2 is a total regress from its predecessor, but does that make it a bad movie? Remember, Harry potter 4 was a regress from Harry Potter 3, but it wasn't bad.
Many actors reprised their roles from the first movie, and there are some new faces as well. Toby Mcguire comes back as Peter parker, but the emotional side that I liked was weaker here than in the previous one. Kristen Dunst plays Mary-Jane and she does actually better here, being given a better script. James Franco is Harry Osborne again and he comes off as a little winney rather than in despair, much like Anikin Skywalker in Star Wars 3. William Defoe Appears sometimes but they are not notable. One of the new actors is Alfred Molina as Doc Ock and he looks like he had fun with the roll, even if his performance is lackluster. One disappointment was Donna Murphy as Doc Ock's wife. Not because she was bad, but because she wasn't in the movie long. She is a good actress and it seemed as a waste.
Though the story was more fleshed out and Peter's and Mary's romance and caring is genuine, everything else is not as good as the first. The effects were better but more in - your - face and less subdued than the first. The ending was not that exciting considering how much they built it up. and a few times in the movie it got boring.
It may not be fair to compare it to the first one, but when you expect a better version of the first one, you can't help it.
It isn't a horrible movie but it is weak. If you really care about what happens to Peter and Mary, than you should probably see it. If you don't care, then you may not like it, Spider-man fan or not.
