Review of Sphere (1998) by Blake J — 17 Jan 2010
If this movie came out today, it would receive far better reviews from the critical faculty. 1998 was a great year for movies, and merely good ones like Sphere fell by the wayside.
The premise is fascinating, even if it was lifted from Solaris (1972) to some degree. The actors, particularly an ultra-creepy Samuel L. Jackson, deliver effective performances, and the messy/choppy pacing suits the movie's chaotic tone. Sphere is also one hell of a scary ride involving time travel, the unknowable nature of the universe, manifested hallucinations brought on by an alien sphere, and existential philosophy. Maybe it should have a little more character development, but it still has more human elements than recent overrated sci-fi spectacles like Avatar and District 9.
Well worth your time. Hell, the premise alone is worth your time.
