Review of Sphere (1998) by Mike D — 27 Jul 2008
Great actors (Stone aside) and a solid novel as a backstory would make a good movie, right? No. The editing is poor, the direction is basic, the characters are simplistic, and the ending seems to come out of nowhere and be completely unsatisfying.
I have not read the novel, so I'm not sure how much is the fault of the film and how much is Crichton's failing, but either way, the movie is *passable* as a worse version of the Abyss crossed with twist-ridden thrillers, and these twists are a little too obvious to be anything more than "I see it coming.
..just do the twist already, please." Oh, and not to mention the blatant glaring hole in the "JE" versus "HA" issue which you will understand if you watch the film.
