Review of Spellbound (2002) by Michelle . — 24 Jan 2004
This documentary is pretty cool. I've always been fascinated with those American spelling contests and found it quite weird. Maybe we have a thing like that in Germany, too, but I've never come across that kind of contest, never was told about it at school, but it seems to be very common in the USA. Spellbound is all about that, following several children taking part in that kind of contest. And you wonder who's crazier - the children or the parents.
Watching the documentary I thought I really do not want to have a child that's that kind of a geek. And the good thing about me is that I really do not feel attracted to such geeky men. I like intelligent men, but I do not like men that are really overly geeky. I like people that still can relax somehow. And I think that's gonna be the reason why I'll never end up with a child that's gonna join that kind of crazy contests. You're proud of your child then, of course, but it's just mad. And they focus on things that are not really important in the end. You should be able to spell, but you do not need to know how to spell every word you'll probably never have to use.
