Review of Spellbound (2002) by Jeffrey J — 29 Dec 2004
You wouldn't think that a documentary about 8 young children trying to become national spelling bee champions would be entertaining or something even worth watching. Your assumptions wouldn't be unwarrented but would, surprisingly, be wrong. "Spellbound" is not only an incredibly easy movie to watch, you will most likely find these children and their experience riveting.
This movie is incredibly funny, yet also sad. Well, at least it was for me. It is interesting to see how varied the idea of the American dream has become. To these children (and in some cases, it's more their parents), winning the spelling bee is the only acceptable conclusion to their journey. It is a fun, and very real journey you will take with these kids and one that will certainly hold your attention to the very end.
